AquaVolt

In much of Northwestern Nigeria, safe water and reliable electricity are missing at the same time. That matters because the conventional answer to unsafe water, a powered treatment system, depends on the very infrastructure that is absent. The places that need purification most are the places where a plug is not an option.

Sunlight is the one input the region has in surplus. A water system that generates its own power removes the dependency that breaks everything else, and a self-sustaining unit can live in a community rather than in a utility's plans.

AquaVolt combines solar generation with water purification and filtration in a single self-sustaining system, designed for communities off or beyond the grid. As technical lead I owned the engineering side of the concept and the product story that carried it through selection, incubation and exhibition.

We applied to iHatch, Nigeria's flagship government-backed incubation programme, implemented by NITDA and the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation with support from JICA. AquaVolt was selected from more than five hundred startups nationwide, placing in the top two for our state.

Five months of incubation followed: coaching, bootcamps, business-model validation, pitch training and investor-readiness sessions. At the end of it AquaVolt stood in the national top ten of the cohort and was awarded a fully sponsored exhibition ticket to GITEX Nigeria 2025.

GITEX Nigeria 2025, held across Abuja and Lagos in September 2025, was the first edition of GITEX on Nigerian soil: more than 20,000 visitors, 650-plus startups from 27 countries, 300-plus investors, and the global technology companies that follow them. Most exhibiting startups came from Lagos and Abuja. AquaVolt came from Sokoto.

Hardware makes you honest. Software can be shipped and fixed; a unit that has to work in a village without a grid forces every decision to be made before it leaves the workshop. The constraint is the product.

It also taught me that the frontier is a position, not a handicap. Every judge and investor we met had heard a hundred Lagos pitches. Very few had heard one from the northwest, about a problem they could not see from their office.
